Music to Echo Your Mood

Comments Off

In what way do the kinds of music (rock, rap, classical,
instrumental, etc.) change or alter our mood and in what way
do our moods effect what music we listen to?

Music has been present throughout the history of man. Of
course musical styles change but the power and popularity of
music never changes. But why is music so popular? What is it
that music offers us and is it just a sound to drown out
others?

Our emotions and thoughts are altered and influenced by
music. Music can influence our emotions and our behaviour to
a great degree, it relaxes us, it energises us, it can make
us sad, or happy. Of course music isn’t some type of mind
control but it studies have consistently shown the link
between music and our moods.

Slow music calms down. Ballads, some forms of classical
music and New Age, as well as meditation music create a
peaceful atmosphere that is good for relaxing after a busy
day or for a romantic dinner. For most people slow music is
de-stressing. It allows them to sit down and relax.

If the music is slowed below approximately 50 beats per
minute it can create an atmosphere of sadness, even
depression. The slow rhythm of certain music can make induce
feelings of powerlessness and desperation.

This kinds of slow music is often found in jazz and
classical music, many people listen to it when alone, at
night usually, when it seems to suit their mood.

In general, instrumental music (excluding military marches
with their fast tempo) is also a way to isolate oneself from
the people around. The rhythm is calm and steady, the tune
is clearer, since there are no voices interfering.

Faster music (such as rock, heavy metal, and dance music)
tends to uplift us. It energises us, and awakens us in a
very real way, making us feel full of life.

Dance music is light and yet fast, it fills us with energy
and relaxes us but it is not complicated by intellectual
overtones. So it allows us to liven up and unwind without
having to think or listen very seriously. For this reason it
is very popular at parties.

Rock and pop music and rap are also often played at parties,
when large groups of people gather together. This is music
for socializing and being together. Most rock, pop, and rap
songs also do not involve special efforts for listening to
and are also suitable for parties.

Rock music is often used to accompany physical labour, its
heavy fast tempo speeds up the heart and one almost works in
time to the music making the work more enjoyable.

Some people think that rock music can cause road accidents,
it is not difficult to see why, it is easy to become ‘caught
up in’ rock music, drivers could become excited by the speed
of the music and drive too fast. But on balance there are so
many sources of driver distraction that it does not make
sense to blame rock music. Nevertheless studies have shown a
definitive link between music and mood.

Some kinds of music, like techno, are produced using
computers and almost constitute an escape into an alternate
virtual world, the music is reminiscent of sci-fi,
technology and the futuristic world we imagine.

World music allows a different type of escape – into another
country. Often people bring home CDs from holiday and when
listening to the music it evokes the spirit of a nation or
area and seems to take them back there.

Music DJ’s

DJs are known for either producing unique music sounds that are played at various night clubs, live concerts, or downloaded by the many fans that follow the DJs. As well, DJs also do performances on a local level by playing at Toronto wedding parties, baptisms, bar mitzvahs, corporate functions and social galas for their city, be it Toronto, Mississauga, Richmond Hill, Hamilton, Niagara Falls and much more. As well DJs are able to introduce music by being incredible microphone personalities or interactive MCs for events such as weddings in Toronto and for corporate functions or galas.

DJs that make their trade playing at Toronto wedding celebrations, can make their music stand out by the way that they setup their surround sound system. By a surround sound system we mean to have the speaker system, amplifier, turntables etc, in place to be able to play music at the venue and to have the highest quality sound for the wedding guests of Toronto for example, they need to have all their latest equipment in place to be able to produce a sound that is suitable for all people.

With Toronto being so competitive in the music DJ industry, someone looking to hire a DJ for their corporate party, wedding reception or social gala must know that a DJ must be able to perform at a high level and do so to make the guests and party goers of any venue that the DJ performs in at the highest level. Toronto is that has the understanding of creating an atmosphere of producing great music and doing it with very high quality sounds as well.

Music for Brain Food

School is very competitive these days. Actually life is very competitive. Everyone is looking for a way to get a little edge over the next guy or gal. Although I believe that cooperation and not competition is the way to go, maximizing your brain’s potential certainly can’t hurt. Today there is ample research documenting that that music is far more than just entertainment. And yet we know that when school officials cut the budget, music is one of the first things to go. In a recent study headlined “TEXAS ALL-STATE MUSICIANS SCORE 196 POINTS ABOVE NATIONAL AVERAGE ON THE 2000 SAT” the Texas music educators association reported that students involved in orchestra, band, or chorus had higher scores on their SAT’s than students who were not involved in a music program. The students who scored highest were those in the schools’ string orchestras.

Another interesting story comes from The Chronicle of Higher Education, July 11, 1997. In an article entitled “For The Sake Of Science: The Arts Deserve Support,” Robert S. Root-Bernstein, Professor of Physiology at Michigan State University makes many fascinating points about how science and the arts have intersected in order to make our world a better and a safer place. For example, Music can also produce insights useful to science and technology. Take “frequency hopping,” in which coded signals are sent along a constantly changing set of frequencies so that the signals can be neither intercepted nor blocked. In 1942, the composer George Antheil and the actress Hedy Lamar suggested using the melody of a song as a way of sending signals in Morse code. The person receiving the message would already know what song was being used and constantly retune his receiver to the frequency of the next note in the song to hear the Morse-code version of the next letter in the message. Someone who didn’t know which song was being used would have no idea what frequency to listen to. The concept has spawned hundreds of patents and is the basis of many of the secure communications systems now used by the U.S. military.

Of course, no one can guarantee that getting your child involved in music will produce astounding results or great inventions or discoveries. What I can almost guarantee is a lot of fun, satisfaction, and a boost in self-esteem for child and probably for parent. Again, research has shown that students who are actively involved in music programs (and other programs at school) are less likely to become involved in gang activity and other negative behaviors because they have discovered and reinforced positive behavioral skills.
