Music – The Great Healer

Comments Off

Ancient civilizations believed that music had great power of healing. The Ancient Indian sages who created both Hindustani and Carnatic music based on Ragas, believed that each Raga had unique powers of healing, depending on the nature of illness of the listener. But whether you believe in the healing power of music or not, you would not dispute the fact that listening to soft music during times of stress, is always soothing. There is music in the sounds of nature itself. The bubbling brook, the gentle breeze, the sweet sounds of the birds, the rustling of the leaves and the chirping of the insects- all has music built into it- if only one is prepared to listen to it. Lost amidst the sound and fury of modern jet-set living, the din and the noise have drowned out the true sounds of nature. Man himself has no time to sit down and enjoy music. People today are always on the move and would prefer to the thunderous, noisy, boisterous heavy metal type of music rather than listen to the soulful music of the days bygone.

Music, whether of the oriental or the occidental style, if properly composed should be enjoyed by all. Music has no barriers of language, nationality or culture. You can enjoy the wild beats of the African music, the melodious tunes of the carnatic music, the lilting rhythm of the Samba, the inspiring beats of Jazz or the Opera music that tugs at your heart.

The capacity of the human mind to listen to music, is enhanced only by listening. You have to make a habit of listening to good music. Let the nuances and technicalities of music be set aside. Let us be simple and enjoy music like an ordinary mortal. The harmonic sounds of the vocals and the accompanying instruments must spontaneously create a feeling of joy and harmony inside your heart. Then and then only music’s great healing powers are revealed.

Enjoy Music and Get Healed!

A hobby is something that you enjoy doing, something that brings relief of the daily grind and allows you to unwind. Many people turn to music as their form of release. Music is among the most popular of all hobbies. There are several different ways to enjoy music as your hobby. Even if you can’t play a single note, music is powerful enough to go above and beyond any limitations that you may impose on yourself. Jump in with both feet and discover the different ways you can enjoy the soothing and sometimes exciting facets of music.

It’s pretty safe to say that there would be no music if there was nobody to play it. There really are no boundaries when it comes to picking up an instrument and learning to play. Anyone can do it if you have the patience and the willingness to learn. It’s a good idea to try more than one type of instrument in order to know what you really prefer and what feels the most natural to you. It’s best not to make your decision on something like how cool a certain guitar looks on your favourite rock star. Everyone needs to develop their own musical styling with the instrument that is best for them.

Writing music is one of the most profound ways to dig deep into yourself and see what you have to offer in a musically creative format. Don’t expect the first thing you write to be an amazing piece of work. It takes time to build up to it. Starting small is necessary for even the greatest of musicians. Don’t feel as if what you write isn’t worth sharing with others either. It’s common to feel insecure when you develop your own original music but if your passion is in it, let it speak for itself.

Some music fans find that playing an instrument is more than gratifying and they commit to collecting as many as possible. Even if you don’t play a particular instrument, having it in part of your collection is still remarkable. Think about how many people you know that have a piano and never play it. Many of us know somebody like that. Something s beautiful as a fine piano should be played but it also makes a gorgeous piece of d

African Music

Comments Off

The music of Africa is arguably the most influential music in the history of the world. But it did not originate in a vacuum. The truth is that different regions of Africa were influenced by a number of foreign musical traditions. For example, many nations in North Africa can trace their musical lineage back to the Greeks and Romans who once ruled the area. Later there was also a substantial Middle Eastern influence on their music.

Other parts of the African continent were similarly affected by foreign music. Parts of East Africa and the offshore islands were influenced by Arabic music and Indian music. While Southern, Central and West Africa had been influenced by the music of North America and Western Europe. Other African music can be attributed to specific dance forms such as the rumba and salsa, which were founded by African slaves who settled in Latin America and the Caribbean. In this article we will be exploring the different kinds of African music and where it originated.

North Africa

The music of North Africa was strongly influenced by the music of ancient Egypt and the early Arabs. Although it is one of the least popular forms of contemporary African music, it is historically significant and merits examination by all those interested in traditional music.

Sub-Saharan Music

No music is more purely African than music that originated in Sub-Saharan Africa. Though many regions were influenced by other nations, Sub-Saharan music remains quintessentially African. Because writing and reading came late to parts of Africa, this music was developed as a form of communication. In time, it became an exciting, communal way to celebrate and mark the major milestones in a person’s life. For example, there are literally hundreds of African songs that celebrate marriage, childbirth or even hunting parties.

Music is also played to ward off noxious spirits and to pay homage to deceased ancestors. African music of this type is almost always accompanied by a specific dance or ceremony. It is often performed by professional musicians who have experience with ceremonial music.

Because music from Sub-Saharan Africa focused on communal singing, it was one of the earliest to emphasize the use of harmony and structured singing. These singing methods ranged from simple rhythmic structures to incredibly complex and elaborate structures based on improvisation and variation.

Instruments

Though stringed instruments, bells, flutes and even xylophones were all used in traditional African music, there is nothing more important than the basic African hand drum. In fact, there are literally dozens of drums that are played on different occasions. A few of the most popular drums that are used in a traditional African musical include: bougarabou, tama talking drums, djembe, water drums and a many different kinds of ngoma drum that are played in parts of Central and Southern Africa.

These drums are almost always accompanied by singers or choruses who often keep time with rattles, shakers, woodsticks, bells or by simply clapping their hands’ or stumping their feet.
