Sedona Jazz on the Rocks

Comments Off

Envision a formation of uniquely shaped red rocks situated on a plateau with the river rushing by and you have just found paradise. Sedona puts its best foot forward in September when they welcome you to the Sedona Jazz on the Rocks Festival. 2009’s dates are September 22nd thru the 27th. The tradition of this festival began in 1981 when the first jazz musicians took to the stage, and the event has gained in popularity ever since. Jazz is considered an art form, and no one does it better than the Sedona Jazz on the Rocks Festival. Everything comes together when you place fantastic music in a breathtaking town like Sedona.

For five days in September the world’s greatest jazz musicians descend on Sedona. Legends and newcomers burst onto the landscape, enriching lives with their performances. The organization is nonprofit, with some of the proceeds going to send aspiring jazz talents to music schools. You can attend free concerts, so grab a chair and spend the day.

The Sedona Jazz on the Rocks continues to grow and each year we see more events added to the program. Some of the favorites from last year included the films and a larger schedule of free concerts. Jazz lovers were able to enjoy the wonderful beauty of Sedona at the outdoor stage. The addition of a dinner and dancing to the great sounds of the festival was a complete success.

We are all hoping that the wine maker dinner that was one of the features of the 2008 festival will make a return. This event was as delicious as it was entertaining. However, everyone looks forward the most to the all day festival. Last year’s artists included the Bobby Hutcherson Quartet, B3’s Tony Monaco, Giacomo Gates and the Sedona Jazz on the Rocks Youth Band. They were just some of the performers that excited us on stage. We will undoubtedly see the same high caliber jazz musicians in 2009.

The Radisson Poco Diablo Resort hosts the festivities as usual. Some of the free concerts took place at Tlaquepaque in the past and we should see a return to this unique shopping plaza. The ambiance that is the essence of Tlaquepaque blends beautifully with the resounding jazz notes that fill the air. Dine at the fine restaurants and pick up the perfect remembrance of your enchanting visit to the Sedona Jazz on the Rocks Festival.

You can expect to once again find music clinics at the school. These clinics have proven to be extremely popular with everyone that attends the festival. The clinics will encompass several days, so be sure to check the schedule so you don’t miss them. Free concerts will follow the clinics as they have in the past.

Sedona Jazz on the Rocks has awarded fourteen scholarships totaling approximately $38,000 to Arizona’s most promising new jazz artists. Their commitment to furthering the music and careers of young people has been recognized since its inception.

The friendly hospitality, the red rock spires inviting you to relax, and the marvelous sounds of the Sedona Jazz at the Rocks Festival are all waiting for you in Sedona. Come join the fun at this year’s festival. For more information you can call (928) 282-1985.

The Isle of Wight Jazz Festival

The Isle of Wight Jazz Festival saw its beginnings in 2005 in the seaside town of Tentnor. Since it’s inception, this festival has hosted such artists as Terry Callier, Cleo Laine, John Danworth, Dennis Rollins, Ian Shaw, Humphrey Lyttelton and Maceo Parker. The talent pool used for this festival come from not only long established talents, but also the up and coming jazz talents. Along with the Jazz Festival, there will also be a Beer Festival and entertainment. This entertainment extravaganza is being called Easter Week of Entertainment in Ventnor.

After a lot of planning and organizing, the 2009 festival eventually had to be cancelled the organizers sighted economic downturn and lack of sponsors as the reason the festival was cancelled, however, there is also speculation that the event was cancelled because many venues were refusing to accept bookings from the organizers of the event. There was much talk about the suppliers and musicians of the year before having never been paid. The new venues were requesting a myriad of documentation proving that all the musicians and suppliers for the year before had indeed been paid in full. There was so much controversy over the alleged non payment of artists and suppliers that the Wight Jazz Festival for 2009 had to finally be cancelled. It was a true shame that this event was cancelled as this festival is known for its blend of established and new artists and promoting new, pioneering styles of jazz. The organizers vowed to pay all refunds, cancellation fees and outstanding billings for this event within a month. This event was due to take place at East Dene in Bonchurch in April. There is still talk that vendor bills from years prior are still outstanding.

The 2010 Wight Jazz Festival is already in the planning stages. The festival is due to take place on the 9th, 10th and 11th of April in 2010 and they are already working out the program. They will, as always, be featuring both established talents and new talent for 2010. You can expect ten full days of arts, entertainment and beer during the Easter week festivals. The annual Beer Festival will be taking place in the Ventnor Wintor Gardens on Good Friday and will be going all week. You can purchase tickets separately so you can pick the events you would like to attend. Also in the area of the festival are all sorts of specialty restaurants and novelty shops. No matter how hard you try, you’ll be hard pressed to be bored for even a minute with so much entertainment going on all around you. The Jazz Festival has events planned right up to the finale finish of the weekend. It appears as though the organizers of this event have started early and have been working steady in order to get it fully organized and funded so that it will come off smoothly and not come down to the last bit and be cancelled like last years event. This event is earning a reputation as a place to combine seaside fun with amazing concert nights plus all the dining and drinking you could want. Add to that all of the shopping including retro shopping experiences and you’ve got a week that you’ll have a hard time figuring out when you are going to take a few minutes to sleep.

Mexico City Annual Jazz Festival

Every year, Mexico City embraces jazz as it holds its annual Jazz Festival. While it is still a young festival, it is growing in popularity and has seen some of the best and brightest jazz singers perform. It is truly a blend of music that will soothe your senses and spark your imagination.

The Jazz Festival is held in two places: The Teatro Metropolitan and the Auditoria Nacional. Both are large heritage buildings with an exquisite architecture as well as excellent acoustics. These buildings are classic and beautiful, and will surely take your breath away. They were chosen as the location for the jazz festival because they contribute greatly to the ambience of the Jazz Festival and form a perfect backdrop for an offering of sophisticated jazz.

During the jazz festival, you will be treated to spectacular performances by high caliber local and international stars. Past performers include Jamie Cullum and Bebel Gilberto. The quality of music at the jazz festival was received with great excitement and positive response in previous years, and the organizers are working hard to ensure an equally good event this year.

While the performances are truly the highlight of the event, the organizers intend the Jazz Festival to also be an educational experience. There is a consistent effort to unearth fresh new jazz talents and to showcase budding jazz singers and performers who have the potential to become the next big thing. Thus, the audience will be treated not just to known talents but also recently discovered ones. This adds a spark and a unique edge to the Mexico City Jazz Festival, allowing it to differentiate itself from jazz festivals all over the world.

Besides the annual Jazz Festival in Mexico City, the adjacent cities of Santa Fe and Albuquerque also jointly hold an internationally-acclaimed jazz festival. While it is in the early years of inception just like the Mexico City jazz festival, it too has been drawing positive response. Visitors who attend the Mexico City jazz festival may want to set aside some time to attend this jazz festival, which has been likened to a sister event that will complement the whole jazz experience.

Jazz lovers will not regret making time for these jazz festivals which have been noted for their distinctive features compared to jazz festivals elsewhere in the world. Mexico, and Mexico City in particular, has long had a strong jazz culture, and this looks set to grow and take the Mexico City Jazz Festival to even greater heights in years to come.
