Where Can I Hear Live Jazz Music?

Jazz is a dying breed of music. Today’s genre of music has drifted from the classics and ran towards rap, pop, and rock and roll. Jazz will never be forgotten though. Jazz music is some of the greatest American music to this day. The other day I was wondering where I can hear live jazz music? So I did some investigating to find out some options for those classic jazz lovers.

Jazz is still popular world wide, but you have to really look in some areas to find what you are looking for. Some times it is just best to go back to where jazz grew up. Get back to the roots of music itself to find some great jazz classics. Kansas City, Boston, and New Orleans are three major cities that pride themselves on their great jazz clubs. At these clubs you can hear live performances of originally made jazz music and live renditions of your favorite jazz artists from the past. Jazz clubs are a great place to have a few drinks and just step into a time machine. Jazz music is music with a soul of its own and gave birth to many new styles of music today.

Others have asked me, “Where can I live jazz music without leaving the house?” This is a very good question and not to difficult to answer either. If you want to hear the live styles of your favorite jazz musicians you can always look up some great jazz stations on your radio. It may not be as great as hearing them live and in person, but you can still hear great live performances from the comfort of your own home. Some of these radio stations can really bring jazz to life and by closing your eyes you can actually feel like you are at a true jazz concert with your favorite oldies.

Jazz is a style of music that really moves people. It is really catchy and great to move your feet to. A lot of major cities in America have areas commemorated to the time of jazz. In Chicago, one of my favorite places where I can hear live jazz music, you can hear great musicians playing jazz on nearly every street corner. Jazz has a lot of heart and will never really die and definitely will never be forgotten. You can find people on corners with their saxophone case open on the sidewalk as people leave donations while they play away the blues.

Jazz will forever go down in history as one of the greatest styles of music ever created. As long as America still knows music jazz clubs will always be around. These clubs have become a shrine to the greats who started jazz and help keep these greats close to the heart of America. So the next time someone asks you, “Where can I hear live jazz music?” You can say, “Just around the corner.”

Everyone has their favorite style of music that really makes them come alive and no matter what genre is the one that you choose, there is no doubt that jazz music has the ability to delight and infuriate people the world over. Some people are unable to take to this form of music but many people truly adore jazz and would rate it as their favorite genre of all the option available today.

There are many great artists making jazz today but for many people, the old jazz standards are what truly appeals to them and many budding jazz musicians are looking to learn the styles of the original artists who made the classic jazz records that have inspired thousands of musicians and fans throughout the years and generations. Jazz is one of the most exciting and inspirational styles of music around and being able to play in the style can be a great bonus for the musician, their friends and family and countless people they may encounter through the music. Jazz is a type of music that allows people to get together and share their passion and love for this exciting and much loved genre.

Jazz may at times seem to be a puzzling and confusing style of music but this can create an ever bigger challenge and increase the desire for a great number of people to learn how to play this innovative and exciting style of music. Yes, jazz music can be more challenging than a great number of musical styles but this does not mean that it is impossible to learn. Anyone who is capable of mastering the music of jazz can take an immense pride at being able to bring together many of the intricate styles that make up jazz standards.

Whether its their startling innovation skills or the way they manage to conjure up new sounds and push the boundaries of music, jazz has the ability to bewilder and bewitch people all across the land. Having the ability to join in with other jazz musicians is a great talent in itself and having the talent to make music with others is something that many musicians crave.

How Jazz Got Started

Though many associate the birth of jazz music with the city of New Orleans, its origin may be a bit more ambiguous. Like many other musical forms, jazz evolved over a period of years. Many believe its evolution took place over decades. It’s widely agreed, however, that jazz music as we know it today was born in the southern United States. It is also accepted that it developed from a variety of different influences, culminating in a style that became its own genre.

Jazz’s major influence probably came from African slaves brought to the United States in the 1800s. In fact, African music influenced many styles of music, including rock and roll. The form that evolved into jazz consisted specifically of call-and-response singing, syncopation and improvisation. Ragtime, which may be considered a precursor to modern jazz, drew upon many of these elements.

Ragtime music originated after the emancipation of African slaves. The newfound freedom of slaves was bittersweet. Though freedom was deserved and appreciated, there were few job opportunities for freed slaves. Many had no means of self-support, and some simply stayed on with their former owners. Others supported themselves through musical performance. Often, this meant performing in dubious locations, like brothels and minstrel shows.

It was these types of venues that gave rise to ragtime, which enjoyed a brief period of popularity in the late 19th and early 20th century. Talented ragtime musicians like Scott Joplin were generally recognized much later for their contributions to modern jazz.

Though ragtime only graced the music scene for a few years, it influenced what would become referred to in 1915 as jazz music. While the actual origin of the term is uncertain, the name stuck. Cities like New Orleans have since become synonymous with jazz. This is not necessarily because it originated there, but because its musicians have added a distinct flavor to jazz music. Dixieland jazz bands still largely dominate the musical culture of New Orleans. Thanks to modern artists like Louis Armstrong, Winton Marsalis and Miles Davis, Dixieland-style jazz continues to enjoy mainstream popularity.

Once jazz music became labeled as such, more variations developed. Swing was one of those, which saw its height in the 1930s. Swing greats like Count Basie, Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller are still covered by today’s musicians. Although swing isn’t the genre it once was, it still has a big following today.

Because of its early association with brothels and speakeasies, jazz music had a stigma to overcome in its early years of development. Eventually, jazz became an accepted art form. Today jazz is embraced and taught as its own branch of music.

Jazz music is most distinguished from other musical forms for its reliance upon improvisation. The best jazz musicians have gained notoriety for their ability to play without the aid of written music.

They are able to make up music on the spot and off-the-cuff. It’s entirely possible for a song to be different every time it’s performed. This may be one reason that jazz fans believe that the most talented of the world’s musicians are not classical musicians, but purveyors of jazz.
